As I have tried to describe some of my early work with wood, or search for photographs I thought I would add a few to the site.
It is a very long time since I had the opportunity to do any wood turning, and even longer since I worked designing and making furniture.
I have kept very little from that time as I have moved many times since.
The small table is a 'Journeyman Piece' that is a quarter scale model of a real idea, made as a demonstration of skill.
Often when such pieces are seen in antique shops they are assumed to be 'dolls furniture'. They are not. I made a number of chairs in quarter scale.
It was traditional as a way of demonstrating chair design to customers, without carrying full sized chairs about the countryside. I have not kept any of these and cannot find any photographs either.
My dressing table and mirror stand were also made, but at full size, to demonstrate possibilities. This was the first mirror stand which I made. Later ones were all for customers.
The wood is London Plane (lace wood because of the lace like pattern) and English yew wood which is pale apricot coloured when first worked.
The 'Red Queen' is a chess piece - I would photograph some of the others if I could find them. She is made from brown oak. The 'white' pieces were made from yew wood.
